| Website: | Systema Russian Martial Art |
I am a alumni of East Carolina University, receiving my BA in English and minor in Philosophy in July '07. I like to read works of imaginative literature, philosophy, religion especially Orthodox Christianity, and others. I haven't written much but I should learn to like it haha. I love music...and I am an aspiring Orthodox Christian (baptised in a Baptist church, haven't been baptised or chrismated in an Orthodox church...yet). I am learning Russian and am a Russophile, and also interested in travel and many different cultures; but Russia holds a special place in my heart. I study a martial art...but it is not about destruction, even if you want to call it a martial art, it is more of a self-evaluating tool to learn about yourself. The art is indegenous to Russia, was preserved and nurtured in the monasteries, was kept secret during Soviet reign as taught to certain special forces, and after the fall of communism is being disseminated in and outside of Russia to the public. That is what is traditionally told of the history, but I like it because it is immersed in Orthodoxy. It is a beautiful art and in many ways has been a blessing because by God's grace it led me to the Orthodox Church.
I like to drink on occasion, and honestly am still trying to learn moderation and social drinking and...even more important humility because only from humility can I unselfishly socialize with others. I am an only child and a military brat. My father, though never boasting about it, served in the U.S. Navy Seals from 1983 to 1989; these were also the first 6 years of my life. I only mention his accomplishment here because I am proud of him as my father. I am a reluctant student, but I think I have become much less reluctant essentially through my stay here in college. I am in my fourth year currently, and by God's Providence I pray graduation will come in one more year. Then I will be off to the real world, hopefully a wife and a family of my own, but forgive these things because they are all speculation and fantasy. What I really hope God gives me is the sense of fear and awe of the second coming of our Lord, that is the only way I think I will ever quit being so lazy and live each moment with the clarity of its profound urgence and necessity.
